Hal NewhouserTuesday 8/29/1949: DETROIT - Detroit is without its ace Hal Newhouser for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Phil Cavarretta in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Newhouser was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. Opposing players hit .218 against Hal this season. While posting an ERA of 2.39 he went 21-11 in 37 starts, fanning 185 and walking 85 hitters. He has 18 complete games and 5 shutouts. He’s 1st in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins!

Ewell BlackwellTuesday 8/1/1949: Ray Scarborough couldn’t have pitched much better than he did in July, and the AL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 1.24 helped him to a 5-0 record in July. He worked 50.2 innings, striking out 21 hitters while walking 6. His ERA of 2.37 helped him to a 13-6 record this year. He struck out 84 and walked 45 in 178.2 innings. Ray has pitched one shutout and 9 complete games. Winner of this months NL Pitcher of the Month award is Brooklyn’s Ewell Blackwell. He started 8 games in July, going 6-1 and compiling an ERA of 2.64 in 64.2 innings. Ewell fanned 61 hitters. This season Blackwell compiled an ERA of 3.49, going 18-7 in 28 starts. He fanned 174 while giving up 187 hits in 229.2 innings. He has 14 complete games and one shutout. He’s 5th in the NL in ERA and 2nd in wins!

Hal NewhouserThe Brooklyn Dodgers lead the National League by a enormous 14-game margin, thanks to their recent 11-game winning street. Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers have built a four-game lead on their nearest pursuers, the New York Yankees. The Dodgers have thrived thanks to a balanced offense and pitching attack. They lead all of TRNP in both runs-scored and fewest-allowed. Ted WilliamsWednesday 6/14/1949: BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)’s centerfielder Ted Williams once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland’s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Wednesday. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Steve Gromek in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 432 feet from home plate. A pitch from Steve Gromek in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run double. In the 5th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Bryan Stephens. A double off Bill Bevens in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. A double off Lyman Linde in the 8th inning accounted for his 5th hit. Ted scored 5 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .330. Boston (A) improved its record to 38-30, scoring 17 runs on 19 hits.

Ray ScarboroughThursday 6/1/1949: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
The best month of May in the AL certainly had Washington’s right-hander Ray Scarborough, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 24 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 24 innings. His ERA in May was 2.14. Ray also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .252 against Ray this season. While posting an ERA of 2.93 he went 6-4 in 11 starts, fanning 42 and walking 28 hitters. He has 5 complete games and one shutout. Winner of this months NL Pitcher of the Month award is Brooklyn’s Vic Lombardi. He started 8 games in May, going 6-2 and compiling an ERA of 2.51 in 68 innings. Vic fanned 30 hitters. Vic fired two shutouts! This season Lombardi compiled an ERA of 3.36, going 7-5 in 15 starts. He fanned 56 while giving up 115 hits in 126 innings. He has 8 complete games and 2 shutouts. He’s 7th in the NL in ERA and 5th in wins!

Joe DiMaggioThursday 6/1/1949: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The AL Batter of the Month award goes to Joe Dimaggio, New York (A)’s starting centerfielder. Joe went 37 for 94 (.394), while hitting 8 HR and collecting 28 RBI. This year Dimaggio drove in 57 and scored 50 runs while batting .401 with 19 bombs. He’s 1st in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Earl Torgeson of Boston (N) wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the NL. He hit .402 with 31 RBI and slugged .878 in 82 at bats. His season numbers are: .277 AVG, 49 hits, 13 doubles, 2 triples and 10 bombs, along with 39 RBI and 40 runs scored. He’s 6th in the NL in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!

Vic WertzMonday 5/15/1949: Vic Wertz wins his 1st Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn’t figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 21 at bats he hit .476 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Philadelphia (N)’s Tommy Hughes this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Hughes was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.08 helped him to a 5-4 record this year. He struck out 38 and walked 33 in 84.2 innings. Tommy has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He’s 4th in the NL in ERA and 6th in wins!

Allie ReynoldsMonday 5/1/1949: New York (A)’s pitcher Allie Reynolds is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. His ERA of just 1.63 helped him to a 6-1 record in April. He worked 60.2 innings, striking out 32 hitters while walking 22. Allie fired two shutouts! Winner of this months NL Pitcher of the Month award is Brooklyn’s Hal Gregg. He struck out 34 hitters in his 8 starts, putting together a record of 6-2 while pitching 34 innings. His ERA in April was 2.97. Hal also fired a shutout.

Hal GreggWednesday 4/5/1949: BROOKLYN - Hal Gregg had his best stuff going, and Pittsburgh hitters were chanceless. Brooklyn’s right-hander fired a NO-NO, his 1st shutout of the season. ‘Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I’m so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.’ Gregg (2-0) fanned 5 and walked 4, throwing 122 pitches. Eddie Miksis helped Gregg at the plate, he went 2 for 4, and driving in 2 runs. Brooklyn scored 6 runs on 8 hits.
